A Call for Reform in the LBC

police-reformIs the Long Beach Police Department in need of reform?  Fresh off a devastating defeat, the Long Beach Police Department has been exposed for wrongfully terminating an African-American employee.  In the wrongful termination lawsuit, Massey v Long Beach PD (BC 518178), the city was found liable and will pay out nearly $500,000 in combined damages to the plaintiff.  

In an article appearing in the Beach Comber, a Long Beach based media source, Long Beach resident and retired LAPD Deputy Chief Stephen Downing, is calling for the creation of a blue ribbon commission for the Long Beach Police Chief to report to.  The Chief of Police currently reports to the city manager.

Building and maintaining community trust is the cornerstone of successful policing and law enforcement. The ethical work of our many good police officers is easily undone by the actions of one unethical officer, or the obfuscation of misconduct by those who hide behind contrived interpretations of the law in order to subvert transparency and public accountability.
