#ElectionWatch: Fact checking endorsements
It’s a great day in the city of Compton. Compton School board trustee Satra Zurita has released a campaign flyer featuring a who’s who of elected officials supporting her for Compton City Clerk over incumbent, Alita Godwin. For shits and giggles, 2 Urban Girls reached out to some of Zurita’s endorsers to find out why they’re supporting her and what they expect her to do differently than Alita. Their answers will shock you.
The duties of the city clerk’s office are to post notices for bids, record minutes for city council meetings, run elections and most importantly are holders of ALL official city records. The position has NO voting authority. The salary for the full-time elected position exceeds $100k. Other perks include a car allowance and the possibility of Zurita keeping her school board seat, if elected.
Compton School Board Trustees recently voted to move their regular board meetings to Wednesday’s instead of Tuesday’s. Many believe this move will allow Zurita to hold two seats.
After reviewing Zurita’s list of endorsers, 2 Urban Girls reached out to many of them to find out why they were supporting Zurita over the incumbent and what were they looking for her to achieve.
Not a single one responded. Who did 2 Urban Girls reach out to?
Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, West Basin board member Leticia Vasquez, Carson Mayor Albert Robles, Carson council member Jawane Hilton and LA Community College Trustee Scott Svonkin. Two refused to be identified, where one candidly responded “I don’t recall endorsing in this race.”
If they can’t answer why they are endorsing her, why are they listed? Perhaps to deceive voters?
