Alex Johnson Appointed to L.A. County School Board

alex johnsonAlex Johnson has been nominated to the Los Angeles County school board by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. After receiving 47% of the vote in last week’s LAUSD special election, Johnson, 34, has accepted the nomination to succeed Rudell S. Freer, the longest serving county board member.

LACOE’s seven board members serve at the pleasure of the nominating supervisor with terms spanning four years.

“I am honored to have this opportunity to serve on the Los Angeles County Board of Education,” said Johnson.

Johnson confirmed he has resigned from his current position in Mark Ridley-Thomas’ office, in the capacity of deputy of education and public safety, and has not made any future plans on employment or if he will run against Dr. George McKenna in March.

“I am delighted to appoint Alex Johnson to this important position, having had the pleasure of working closely with Alex over the past four years” said Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. He looks forward to the education needs of underserved community schools in L.A. County school districts being served by Johnson.

Johnson is a graduate of Morehouse College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He earned his Juris Doctorate at American University in Washington D.C. Mr. Johnson previously served as an Assistant District Attorney in The Bronx, New York.

Alex Johnson must be confirmed by the full board of supervisors before assuming the unpaid position in early September.

LACOE covers 80 schools districts and 13 community colleges overseeing finances and educational policies. LACOE also has direct authority over interdistrict attendance appeals, school district boundaries and expulsion appeals. This seat covers Centinela-Valley, Compton, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lennox and LAUSD.
