The interview Dr. George McKenna hasn’t responded to

Dr. George McKenna

Dr. George McKenna

2UrbanGirls reached out to both candidates for the LAUSD District 1 school board race.  The race has taken a nasty turn since this author reached out to them.  This interview was sent to Dr. McKenna’s campaign manager on July 9th and it has yet to be responded to.  Many teachers feel that I let Alex Johnson “get away” with being evasive, when in reality, he answered my questions, in spite of his disagreeing with them.  Dr. George McKenna has an impeccable career as an educator and school reformer.  This author’s questions centered around how do you achieve reform and turn around troubled schools.  Referring me to a movie was not sufficient in my eyes.  Movies can be embellished for mass appeal and to sell accompanying dvd’s.  My questions were thoughtful and non antagonistic in nature.

As a mother, who struggles between keeping my son in a traditional school v charter, it is imperative to know how we work with elected officials to bring about change and what our role and responsibilities are to achieve it.  Questions posed to Dr. McKenna differed from those posed to Alex Johnson, for the simple fact that the McKenna campaign is based on his record, and I wanted to know how he got it done.

Questions

Thank you Mr. McKenna for agreeing to interview with 2UrbanGirls.  Our readers are very interested in the Los Angeles School board race and we appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to speak with us.

Are you surprised by the outpour of community support your campaign is receiving?

McKenna

You have an impressive resume that includes being a reformer.  We both come from Louisiana, my family is from New Iberia.  Can you share your accomplishments while working in that school system?

McKenna

You would eventually move to California and were brought on to revamp Washington Preparatory High School.  What significant challenges did you face and how did you accomplish such a remarkable turnaround?

McKenna

Parental involvement is at an all-time low.  How will you work to increase parents involvement in their children’s education, especially taking into consideration the significant amount of foster children in District 1?

McKenna

You are no stranger to working alongside the LAUSD board, who at times haven’t made the best decisions, the iPad debacle being the first thing coming to mind.  Many schools in District 1 didn’t receive.  How do you plan on working with the board to ensure resources are spent wisely and evenly distributed?

McKenna

Common Core standards are changing the way our children are being taught.  Can you explain what implications Common Core has for both teachers and students?

McKenna

You have the added benefit of being a star, so to speak.  The George McKenna story is a movie based on your successes while principal at Washington Prep.  How did that project come to fruition?

McKenna

Denzel Washington was the actor selected to portray you in the George McKenna story.  I have to ask, was he your first choice or did you have a say in the matter?

McKenna
